A couple of weeks ago, my poor hammie DUFFY gave birth to 2 pups but they didn't survived as both died, one was severely hurt. It was DUFFY's first time giving birth and I think she wasn't ready and DINO stressed her up, chasing her everywhere wanting to mate with her as hamster can be on heat once they give birth, thus they breed fast! We didn't realised that DUFFY was pregnant altho she seems fatter than usual and we thought she was putting on weight as she was eating more than DINO. One day we playing with her and DINO when suddenly she regurgitated some undigested melons seeds, corn and nuts. The very next day , she gave birth to 2 pups but Mummy and I was so sad when we discovered her pups died. We felt that it might have due to over playing that resulted her giving birth but we were clueless that she was pregnant.
Then recently, mum mentioned DUFFY might be pregnant again as she looked fatter and kept eating whenever we feed her. She would take the melon seeds from our fingers and kept them in her cheeks and then regurgitate them later, chew off the husk and eat the seeds inside. Mum noticed she was breathing heavily and getting tired more than usual so she kept reminding me NOT to play or take her out from her cage at all just in case she is pregnant.
Finally, on midnight 2nd May, mum heard squeeking noises and saw DINO chasing DUFFY trying to mate with her and about half an hour later at 12:30am , 3rd May 2011, as usual before she sleeps, she looked into the hammies' cage and noticed a cute crimson little pup wriggling inside the green ceramic home nest which she bought in Singapore for them. Next 15 mins, as she was trying to salvage the abandoned pup before it got hurt as DUFFY and DINO was running around, up and down frantically, she noticed another crimson little pup wriggling under their running wheels and quickly remove it with a spoon and put it together with the 1st born pup inside the green ceramic home nest.
After sometime, as DUFFY didn't seem to go near the newly born pups, mum transfered them to the highest level inside a tunnel nest hoping that DUFFY will have more privacy but she looked as if she was anxious, lost and inexperienced. Then mum decided to separate DINO and DUFFY with her pups. She put DUFFY and her pups into their old smaller cage where she has more privacy and intimate room to bond with her pups without DINO chasing her around to mate with her. Mum covered the cage with a cloth and shredded some soft tissue and in an instance, DUFFY begins to build a nest with the shredded tissue inside the green ceramic home nest and started to breastfeed her pups!
Later that morning, mum woke up to peep at DUFFY and saw her carrying one of her pups in her mouth and trying to make a more comfy position under the running wheel. She left the other pup inside the nest but an hour later, mum saw that she was breastfeeding both her pups under the running wheel in a more comfy position than the confined and cramped tiny nest. We just hope and pray this time, DUFFY pups will survive.
My hammie, DUFFY finally became a mummy! Happy Mothers Day! We know that one of her pups is a male but we will find out in another 2-3 weeks time so that we can name them. We have a lists of cute names and if the other one is a female , we shall name them DUKE and DUCHESS after Prince William and Kate who got married a couple of days ago. Other names on the lists are DIXIE, DINKY, DIPPY, DIGI and DUDI.
